AVIF files saved from modern websites often refuse to open in image editors, office tools and older viewers. The converter decodes them with libavif compiled to WebAssembly and writes a lossless PNG — on a white background by default, or with transparency intact if you choose “Keep transparency”. This page opens the Image Converter pre-set to PNG.

Decoding AVIF is heavier than other formats — a large image takes a second or two — and the browser downloads the decoder (about 1 MB) once on first use. Everything still happens on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is AVIF to PNG lossless?

The PNG stores the decoded AVIF pixels exactly. The AVIF itself was probably lossy when created, and that cannot be undone, but conversion adds no further loss.

Can I get a JPG or WebP instead?

Yes, change the output format in the toolbar. PNG is the default here because compatibility is usually the reason for converting away from AVIF.

Why is the first file slow?

The AVIF decoder is downloaded on first use and then cached; after that, conversion runs at normal speed. Decoding AVIF is also inherently more work than JPG or PNG.
