Why width is the whole game

A GIF stores every frame as pixels, so file size grows with the square of its dimensions — halving the width roughly quarters the file. That is why a GIF that chat apps reject at 8 MB often sails through at 320 px wide. This tool scales every frame with Lanczos filtering, rebuilds an optimised colour palette for the new size, and keeps the timing and loop untouched.

Does resizing keep the animation?

Yes — every frame is scaled and the timing and loop are untouched. The colour palette is regenerated for the new size, which often makes the file dramatically smaller than the original.

How do I make a GIF small enough for chat apps?

Width is what matters: the 320 px “Chat” preset typically cuts a GIF to a fraction of its size. Choose “Compact” dithering to squeeze further.
