PNG is lossless and often much larger than it needs to be for a web page. WebP keeps the alpha channel and gives you a quality dial: at 80–90 a screenshot or UI graphic is indistinguishable from the PNG at a fraction of the size, and every current browser displays it. This page opens the Image Converter pre-set to WebP.

Set quality to 100 for near-lossless output when the source is flat graphics with hard edges and you want zero visible change; use 80 for photographic PNGs. Transparent areas are filled with white by default so the result looks right everywhere; switch Transparency to “Keep” to preserve the alpha channel.

Frequently asked questions

Will WebP keep my PNG’s transparency?

It can. WebP supports an 8-bit alpha channel just like PNG. By default transparent areas are filled with white so the image displays correctly on every platform; set Transparency to “Keep transparency” under Advanced settings to preserve the alpha channel instead.

How much smaller will the WebP be?

For photographic PNGs, 60–90 % smaller at quality 80. For flat graphics and screenshots, 25–50 % at quality 90–100. The per-file readout shows the exact figure before you download.

Is WebP safe to use everywhere?

All current browsers, Android, iOS 14+ and macOS Big Sur+ display WebP. Some older desktop software and a few CMS uploaders still reject it — keep the PNG as your editable master.
