Social media image sizes: the 2026 cheat sheet

All 20 platforms, 120+ verified sizes, one table per network — and a one-click resizer for every size.

Updated September 2, 2026 · 9 min read · by the InfyTool team

Every platform crops, compresses and letterboxes uploads its own way, and a post that looks sharp on one network turns into a blurry, badly-cropped mess on the next. This cheat sheet lists the current pixel size for every image slot on 19 platforms — profile photos, covers, feed posts, stories, thumbnails and ads — and each section links to a free resizer already set to those exact frames.

The three rules that prevent 90% of bad-looking posts:

  • Upload the exact pixel size. If the platform wants 1080×1350 and you upload 4000×5000, the platform rescales it with fast, lossy resampling. Do the resize yourself with a proper tool and the platform leaves your pixels mostly alone.
  • Match the aspect ratio before you think about size. Wrong ratio means automatic cropping, and platforms crop from the centre with no idea where your subject is.
  • Respect file-size limits. Go over the limit and the platform compresses hard; the limits that matter are noted per size below.

Instagram image sizes

Instagram shows feed images up to 1080 px wide and gives 4:5 portrait posts the most screen space. Stories and Reels are 9:16; keep text inside the middle 1080×1420 so the UI does not cover it.

How to use these sizes

You do not need to remember any of this. Open the social media image resizer, drop your image once, and it shows a live preview of that image inside every frame above, per platform. A fit–fill slider lets you choose between showing the whole image (letterboxed) or filling the frame (edge-cropped), you can drag the image to reposition it inside each frame, and one click downloads a single size or a ZIP of the whole platform. Everything runs in your browser — the image never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Do social networks compress my images?

Yes — every platform recompresses uploads. You cannot avoid it, but you can control the input: upload at exactly the recommended pixel size (so the platform does not also rescale), keep JPG quality around 85–90, and stay under the platform’s file-size limit so it does not apply aggressive extra compression.

Should I upload PNG or JPG to social media?

For photos, JPG — platforms convert PNG photos to JPG anyway and big PNG uploads get compressed harder. For graphics with text, flat colours or logos, PNG survives the platform’s recompression more cleanly, especially on X and Discord.

What is a safe area and why does it matter?

Parts of a cover or banner are hidden behind profile photos, buttons, or get cropped on phones. The safe area is the region that stays visible on every device. Keep faces, logos and text inside it — the notes in the tables above flag the sizes where this bites hardest, like Facebook covers and YouTube channel art.

Do these sizes change often?

A few change every year — the tables on this page come from the same dataset that powers our resizer and were verified in September 2026. If a platform changes a size, both the tool and this page get updated together.
