Can this add detail that isn’t in the photo?

No — and any tool that claims otherwise is generating (inventing) pixels. Resampling makes the image genuinely larger with clean edges and no jaggies; faces and textures stay at their captured detail level. For icons and graphics the results look excellent; for heavy blow-ups of photos, manage expectations.

Why Lanczos instead of the browser’s own scaling?

Quick “smooth” scaling blurs. Lanczos3, computed in linear light — the same method as professional imaging pipelines — keeps edges defined, and the optional unsharp pass restores the crispness enlargement naturally softens.

When do I actually need an enlarger?
