Video is what GIFs want to be

A GIF stores whole 256-colour frames with 30-year-old compression; H.264 video stores full-colour differences between frames. The same animation as MP4 is routinely 5–20× smaller and looks better. The big platforms know it — Twitter and Reddit silently convert every uploaded GIF to video. Why convert GIF to video at all?

Size and quality. GIF is capped at 256 colours and compresses poorly; H.264 video shows full colour at a tenth of the bytes. Twitter, Reddit and most sites already convert uploaded GIFs to video for exactly this reason — this tool lets you do it first, keeping control.

Will the MP4 autoplay and loop like a GIF?
