PNG is the safe, universally-accepted lossless choice when a form or app rejects HEIC. Expect the PNG to be considerably larger than the HEIC — that is the price of lossless — so for ordinary photos headed to the web, HEIC to JPG is usually the better trade. Everything runs in your browser: the libheif WebAssembly decoder reads the HEIC and the PNG is encoded on your device, so photos are never uploaded. If the pictures are going somewhere with a size limit, run the PNGs through the compressor or convert to WebP afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the PNG so much bigger than my HEIC?

HEIC is a modern lossy format; PNG is lossless and stores photographic detail inefficiently. A 2 MB HEIC can become a 15–25 MB PNG. That is expected — choose JPG or WebP instead when file size matters.

Is HEIC to PNG really lossless?

The PNG stores exactly the pixels decoded from your HEIC with nothing thrown away. The HEIC itself was compressed by the camera, so “lossless” means no further loss from this point.

Do Live Photos and bursts work?

The still image converts; the motion part of a Live Photo lives in a separate video file that a photo converter does not touch.
